Before there was a golf course, there was a family farm. Cregmore Park grew from Catherine and Murty McGrath’s vision for their land in Cregmore, Claregalway. Their story is at the heart of the club you visit today.

From the farm to the fairways

Designed by Dr. Arthur Spring, our par-72 course opened for play in June 2007. Since then, it has welcomed members, visiting golfers and societies to this corner of Galway.

Remembering Catherine McGrath

Catherine brought determination, enterprise and a personal welcome to Cregmore Park. A native of Crumlin in the parish of Abbeyknockmoy, she trained as a nurse in Dublin and worked in England before returning to Ireland. She married Murty in the late 1970s, and they built up the family farm alongside her nursing career.

After nursing, Catherine and Murty established Galway Free Range Eggs. In 1998, Catherine received the Irish Farm Woman of the Year award from President Mary McAleese.

Golf was their next chapter. Together, they developed the remaining farmland into Cregmore Park, persevering through the economic downturn. The local tribute to Catherine in June 2023 remembered her determination and her gift for making people feel welcome.

That warmth is a part of our story we are proud to share with everyone who comes through the club.

With thanks to Josette Farrell’s tribute to Catherine on Claregalway.info, published 14 June 2023.
